What is the impostor word game?
The idea fits in one sentence: everyone has the same word, except one. That player, the impostor, has a very close word (“pool” instead of “beach”, “tiger” instead of “cat”)… and nobody told them they are the impostor. They must listen to the others’ clues to realise, as fast as possible, that their word is different.
In turn, each player gives a clue about their word. That is the whole art of it: a clue that is too precise helps the impostor guess the Civilians’ word; one that is too vague makes you suspicious. After each round of clues, you debate and vote to eliminate someone. Their side is revealed, and the game goes on until the Civilians have unmasked every infiltrator… or the infiltrators are numerous enough to win.
To spice things up, L’Intrus adds the Ghost, who has no word at all and must bluff, and power cards dealt at random: the Mute speaks in emojis, the Judge breaks ties, Cupid binds two fates… The server deals everything and applies the rules: nobody can cheat, and all you need is a browser and a mic.

›Is the game free?
Yes, completely. A shop offers optional themes, word packs and cosmetics, but the base game and more than 300 word pairs are free.
›Do I need to download an app?
No. Everything runs in the browser, on computer and phone alike. You just need a microphone to talk to the other players.
›How many players do you need?
From 3 to 16. The game automatically suggests the right number of impostors (and Ghosts) for your group.
›Does the impostor know they are the impostor?
No! They get a word close to everyone else’s and don’t know it is different. By listening to the clues they can work it out… and blend in.
›What is the Ghost?
A player with no word at all, who knows it. They never start a round, make up clues from the others’ clues, and if unmasked, can still win alone by guessing the Civilians’ word.
›Can I talk privately to one player?
Yes! During the debate, you can whisper to a single player. The others can’t hear you… but they see your mouth move.
›Which languages can I play in?
French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Arabic: the words, menus and the narrator’s voice follow the room’s language.
