Side: Civilians
Civilian
The silent majority: the same word for all… but who really knows who is a Civilian?
- Power
- You have the same word as most players. But you don’t know you are a Civilian!
- Card type
- Side, decided by your word
- Win condition
- Eliminate every impostor and the Ghost.
How to play this role
You get the common word, the majority’s. But the game doesn’t tell you that you are a Civilian: you work it out by listening. If the others’ clues match your word, you are probably on the right side.
Your goal is to eliminate every infiltrator: the Impostor (close word) and the Ghost (no word). Every vote counts: eliminating a Civilian by mistake brings the infiltrators closer to victory.
Strategies and tips
- In the first round, give a clue that confirms your word to the Civilians without giving it away: “sand” for beach is good; “towel by the sea” is too much.
- Spot the “fits-anything” clues: they often come from the impostor or the Ghost, who don’t want to give themselves away.
- Don’t vote too fast: an impostor who has guessed your word may give the most “perfect” clue at the table.
- Give clues precise enough for the other Civilians to recognise you… but not too precise, or the impostor will guess your word.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a Civilian know they are a Civilian?
- No, they only know their word. By comparing it with the others’ clues they understand whether they belong to the majority.
- When do the Civilians win?
- As soon as every impostor and every Ghost has been eliminated.
